The Changing Room 13

I considered training another to do the work. But I hear Grandfather's words, "Careen, some things happen but once under the sun, so far as any of us can see." And I am content.

There is no one -- has never been any one -- in my deepest heart, but Grandfather. Yet Michel seems to have a place always lingering about it. I have told him that I am not as other women. He was saddened, but for me, not for himself. I have feared what might happen if I open the door, but I sense that the fear is turning to wonder.

I wonder at his willingness to go if I say, to stay if I say, this man who, in the changing room, I was unable to change.
